These are writing prompts for Writing Workshop:

  1. Writing Memory (Sept. 6) — You wrote about a piece of writing or an assignment that involved writing that you really enjoyed and also you wrote about some writing that you didn’t quite enjoy.
  2. Harris Burdick (Sept. 7) — You wrote a short story, using the Harris Burdick illustrations as inspiration.
  3. BioPoem Rough Draft (Sept. 10 ) — You wrote a draft of your BioPoem project.
  4. Change the World (Sept. 11 ) — You thought about how you might change the world for the better and wrote a few sentences, and then volunteers contributed their thoughts to a class podcast.
  5. Design a Car of the Future (Sept. 12 ) — You illustrated a car/vehicle of the future and used expository (informational) writing to label parts.
  6. Short Story Titles (Sept. 13 ) — You came up with three to five possible short story titles and then donated one to a class list.
  7. Funny Words (Sept. 18) — I came up with a list of new words to replace old words and you worked them into a short story.
  8. Freewrite (Sept. 19) — You wrote about whatever inspired you.
  9. Short Story (Sept. 20) — Using a list of titles generated by students, you wrote a short story.
  10. Freewrite (Sept. 26) — You wrote about whatever came to mind.
  11. Selling Southampton (Sept. 27) — You created a little advertising poster in which you tout the benefits of living here in Southampton.
  12. Falling Leaf (Oct. 1) — You wrote about a leaf falling from a tree, using first person narrative perspective — the use of “I” in the story.
  13. Add the Adjective (Oct. 2) — I presented you with a pretty boring sentence and then you rewrote the sentence, adding in descriptive adjectives.
  14. Alien Exploration (Oct. 3) — We used our five senses to explore the discovery of a foreign object (candy).
  15. Design a Treehouse (Oct. 4) — You designed a treehouse and used expository writing to label parts.—————Writing notebook check ————–
  16. Monster Exchange (Oct. 11) — You started work on the illustration and writing component of the Monster Exchange descriptive writing project.
  17. Day in the Life of a Monster (Oct. 12) — Using first person narrative writing, you wrote a short story from the viewpoint of your monster.
  18. Story in Second Person (Oct. 17) — You wrote a short story using Second Person Narrative — the use of “you” to grab the reader into the story.
  19. Adventure Story (Oct. 17) — I gave you a series of pictures that were out of order, and you had to put them in sequence and then write a short story about the adventure.
  20. Characters Talking (Oct. 18) — We started to talking about how you write dialogue in a story and you wrote about two inanimate objects talking to each other.
  21. Character Creation (Oct. 19) — You created two characters, using the ideas of a name, description, strength and flaw.
  22. Plot Summary (Oct. 24/25) — You summarized your adventure story in these categories: main characters, setting, what is the problem facing your characters and how does that problem get resolved.
  23. Short Story Rough Draft (Oct. 24/25) — This is where you began writing your short story.
  24. Peace Poster — you wrote a paragraph about your Peace Poster project — examining either your beliefs about peace in the world or the symbolism you used in your artwork. (Nov. 6)
  25. Community Essay Rough Draft — This is where you did your initial writing for your essay project. (Nov. 6)
  26. Harris Burdick Story — I gave you three possible choices from the Harris Burdick mystery folder and you wrote a short story. (Nov. 8)
  27. Freewrite — You wrote what you wanted, in any genre that you wanted. (Nov. 13)
  28. Invent a Sport — You created a new sport and explained the rules of the game. (Nov. 15)
  29. Imaginary Land Brochure Rough Draft — This is where you did some initial work on your brochure project. (Nov. 15)
  30. Buried Treasure — You created a treasure map for someone to find and explore. (Nov. 16)
  31. Spiral Story — You wrote a story that circled around in a spiral shape, about a round object or theme. (Nov. 20 )
  32. Puppet Skit — You wrote a short puppet skit on the theme of friendship. (Nov. 27)
  33. Winter Holiday Creation - This is a brainstorming activity around creating a new winter holiday and possible story idea — using the prompts of setting, characters, plot, resolution and theme. (Nov. 29)

  34. X Force - I gave you a group of superheroes that you had to write a story, or a play, about. You could invent your own villain or superhero, too, if you wanted. (Jan. 7 )
  35. Eponym – You created some thing or idea or animal, etc, and then you named it after yourself. You should have a diagram and a description of your invention. (Jan. 10 )
  36. Olde English — I wrote out a paragraph that used Olde English and you converted it into Modern English. (Jan. 16 )
  37. Short Story Titles — You came up with some possible titles for future short stories and then wrote a short story. (Jan. 22 )
  38. Word Origins Pre-Quiz — You had to figure out which origins of words were being used for sentences that I read aloud to you. (Jan. 23 )
  39. Parts of Speech Sentence — I wrote out this sentence — The furry dog sat patiently by the dinner bowl — and you had to identify nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in the sentence and come up with some of your own. (Jan. 28 )
  40. Parts of Speech Bingo — We played some bingo and you had to write words and their Parts of Speech in order to win a round. (Jan. 29 )
  41. FreeWrite – You could write whatever you wanted — even a piece for the upcoming Tigger Talk newspaper. (Feb. 4 )
  42. Parts of Speech Project (rough draft) — You worked on your 10 sentences and the coding of your words. (Feb. 6 )
  43. Part of Speech Bingo — We played bingo again. (Feb. 8 )
  44. AlphaSentence — Could you make a long sentence, using the letters of the alphabet in sequence to start each word of the sentence? (Feb.11 )
  45. FreeWrite — Write what you want. (Feb. 12 )
  46. How to Raise a Kid — you wrote an expository paragraph about the steps to raising a child. (Feb. 26 )
  47. Party! — You wrote an expository paragraph that gave directions to a room in our Norris School. (Feb. 27 )
  48. Mystery Animal – Descriptive writing about one of the stuffed animals we had in our room.
  49. Stuffed Animal Story — You wrote a first-person perspective story from the view of a stuffed animal coming to life.

  50. How to .. (do something) rough draft — You wrote an expository paragraph on how to do something. (March 10)
  51. Movie Star Name Game — You created a fake movie name for yourself and then created a movie poster, showing the movie you will star in. (March 11)
  52. Narrative Paragraph - You wrote a narrative paragraph about an object that holds some memories for you (such as a souvenir from a vacation or a medal from an event). (March 12)
  53. Freewrite – You wrote what you wanted to write about. (March 13)
  54. Power Pig — In honor of National Pig Day, you created a pig superhero and put them into action. (March 14)
  55. FreeWrite — You wrote what you wanted to write about. (March 17)
  56. Tall Tale — Using hyperbole, you wrote a tall tale about some real event in your life. (March 18 )
  57. Quidditch Play — You designed a play for the game of Quidditch. (March 27)
  58. Simile – You wrote out the ways in which objects were common from a homework sheet (April 1 )
  59. Imagery – I read you color poems and you had to map out the way the poet used the five senses (April 2 )
  60. Figurative Language PreQuiz — You had to identify the different elements of figurative language (April 7)Poetry Journal
    1. Poetry Possibilities — You wrote four poems on a common theme. We later used three of those poems for a hyperlinked poetry project. (April 9 )
    2. My America — I read to you a series of poems of place, and you had to identify the region being written about in the poem.(April 14 )
    3. Poem of Place — You wrote your own poem of place, using imagery. (April 14 )
    4. Pirate Don Durk — I read to you a poem about the pirate and you had to draw a picture of him. (April 15 )
    5. Poetry Map — You drew out the hyperlink connections in your poetry project. (April 17 )
    6. Haikus — You wrote two haikus (5-7-5 syllables) with one about nature and the other about any topic that you wanted. (April 18 )
    7. Shape Poem — You created a funny shape poem, in which the words take the shape of the subject of the poem, with a funny twist. (April 28 )
    8. InsideThis … — You wrote about an inanimate object, using Figurative Language techniques to get at the essence of that thing or idea. (April 28 )
    9. Poem for Two Voices — You wrote a poem for two people to read. (April 29 )
    10. The Raven — We listened to Edgar Allen Poe’s poem, The Raven, and you illustrated a scene from the poem. (April 30 )
    11. Animal in Me — You wrote an eight-line poem in which you compared your personality to that of an animal. (May 2 )
    12. Epitaphs – You wrote at least three epitaphs. (May 5 )
    13. Letter to Mr. Hodgson — You wrote me a friendly letter, discussing your poetry. (May 5 )
  61. Magic School Bus — You examined and reflected on the art and writing and content of a Magic School Bus picture book. (May 13 )
  62. Picture Book Memories — You wrote about a picture book that stands out in your memory from when you were young and why it seems important to you. (May 15 )
  63. Story Summary — You summarized your math picture book story and explained the math concept in the book. (May 19 )
